Fantastic, even with high expectations I thought it was magic and I shall be watching next week. Best bit... reading out the CV.
Robert Comben
I really enjoyed the show but I think Ben Stiller came off as a bit of an a**e and unlike Brent I was acually cheering for Andy at the end. I can't wait for more and if like me you have enjoyed this show I strongley reccomend "Curb Your Enthusiasm". Larry David and Ricky Gervais should get together and do something.
Aaron
To all of those saying we shouldn't compare to 'The Office', when the character is simply a toned-down-Brent, it's hard not to.
Ben Baskin
I wasn't the greatest fan of the Office but I thought this was absolutely brilliant.Comedy of the highest class - in fact- different class.
Daniel
Of course people are going to compare it to "The Office". It would be impossible not to. However people shouldn't. It deals with totally different themes and issues and I think Ricky and Stephen has produced yet another refreshing and original comedy. Well Done!
Toby
i thougt that the show was good, stiller was fantastic and so was ricky's new side kick, some great one liners, some great cruel humor and very enjoyable.
Ruth
Well we watched it and we cringed as we did when we first discovered The Office. We chuckled and we shall be watching the next episode. Ricky's side kick female extra - sorry don't know her name - was brilliant. The characters verbalise things that few of us would dare to
naton
it was good, made me laugh out loud at points but i didnt think it went anywhere if you see what i mean! ill watch the next epsiode cos its bound to get better!!!
Andy Michael
My fave line: "Make Dodgeball 2?"
Owen
Parts of it were quality (stand off between Stiller and Millman, Photos of the dead wife), while other parts were dire (Maggie flirting with the assistant director in his office wasn't funny or cringe worthy), but still its early days, should get better!
Skills
I thought the whole show was great except for one thing: the over reliance on the cliched character of Ben Stiller.
Karl
Didn't really watch the office all that much but i watched the first episode of Extras and considering whats on the box at the minute i do give it ****
Neil G
It's ACE! I can't see the point in comparing it to the office. It's a different show with, more or less, entirely different actors. Ricky clearly didn't want to make another series of the office - and i'm pleased he didn't. Extras should be judged on it's own merit, and so far so good.
Louise Collins
Come on folks! This is pure genius. Comedy works best when it exposes the truth, and this certainly does!!
Jeremy Cullen
Give it time. Do not judge it until the third or fourth episode. The Office was always going to be a hard act to follow. Gervais was excellent as always & the tracksuit was lethal. Stiller did well. Give it a chance for the characters to develop & the audience will build rapport. The problem is that everyone wants more of The Office but that story has ended as it should have. I think when Merchant enters the fray we will see more dynamics. Extras is all about how dispondent it must be for an extra to be on the periphery & this was truly felt by the audience. Little comic moments in an otherwise dull existence is in my opinion the meaning of the show. Wait & see.
KimS
I can't beleive people are slagging Extras off after only one episode!!! C'mon you lot, it's very early days. I think people are expecting another "Office" and are narrow-midedly switching off when David Brent Mark 2 doesnt appear. Extras has a lot of promise and i think it's just going to get better and better. A lot of great, classic comedy started off as slow-burners. I say, watch the entire series and THEN make a judgement!
Clive D
Similar stuff to the Office, same inept characters, nothing new.
Sorry, but I thought it was boring
Joey B
Not superb but by no means bad. For me Stiller made the episode but Gervais' more understated role was well played as usual. I liked the relationship between Ricky and his sidekick and I think it'll blossom well. All in all though, I hope the show doesn't continue to get the majority of its biggest laughs from the guest stars. I'm sure it'll grow as the series progresses.
Dic
It was good, so stop putting it down, becuase I thought it wasn't as good as The Office as well, but good on him for creating this new show, because it sure as Hell made me laugh! Looking forward to more episodes!
Tony Doyle
To be honest I must be the only one on the planet that hasn't seen the Office (apart from a couple of episodes). So in my un-biased opinion I thought Extras was the best piece of comedy I've seen for years.I nearly wet myself with laughter.
Simon D
Cant compare with the Office in anyway as it a completely different setting and characters. He plays an egotistical, selfish, wannabe but unlike the Office he hasnt got any authority. Its not laugh-a-minute but its got some great one liners and there are other characters which keep you interested enough.
Bunny
I thoroughly enjoyed the first episode and look forward to the next. This is a subtle comedy just like the Office - I know if I watched it again I'd find it even funnier the second time as there's a lot you miss when you're first getting used to the style of a new show. Despite this I still found it hilarious and full of classic lines that I'll be laughing about for weeks. People are too quick to judge by far.
Stevie-boy
Only like the Office a little - this was fantastic! Oh how I laughed, over and over again. Can't wait till next episode!!!!
Lucy
Well although I think the first episode could have been better it still made me laugh out loud in parts especially the parts with Ben Stiller who I thought was great! So far it's good, but I know it's going to get even better, because we know Gervais wouldn't give us any old c**p.
Sarah
I liked it but am still a bit disappointed. As I was expecting something a bit better.
Ron of the middle
c'mon..
it was class, pure class.
Gervais played more of himself (maybe) and wasn't too brent at all. His female sidekick is also superb. Madness! Stiller and Gervais having an argument c'mon.. what more dya want people??
loved it.
Suzanne D
To be honest I wasn't expecting much from this series I was pleasantly surprised! I though Gervais was on top form and the script was sharp and very funny. i just hope the rest of the series keeps up this high standard of comedy.
Glenn Johnson
Genius moments, the office began low key, no doubt this will kick on to become the second Gervais and Merchant classic. Brilliant
Brian
I thought it was hilarious. the way ben stiller adopted the mannerisms and speech style of david brent was superb. quality comedy
Mark
I thought it showed a lot of promise. I didn't like The Office until I'd seen about 3 episodes - then I was hooked. I don't agree that Ricky plays a similar character - he is not the main comedy figure this time. I'll reserve judgement till later in the series, but quite hopeful.
sledge
come on ! give it a chance !
the office took time to grow
Joe
I thought extras was really good but I don't think we saw as much of Ricky Gervais' wit as we did in the office. More Gervais please!
david
It's far too early to tell how successful it is, there's still 5 episodes left! Last nights opening was promising, I'm looking forward to more good things to come.
Benjamin Stevens
I tink its great, sure he is like brent, though andy is aware of the fact he is being a jerk.Much more sinister character.Brilliant.Fact
Bart
Bring on some more. A bit of a slow start and I hope it will gain some momentum. Gervais is just too cool.
Les
I thought this programme was very funny and not like The Office at all. Gervais is a master of comedy timing and touching on issues people find uncomfortable but in a clever comedic way. Another winner.
Veronica Newman
My husband and I cringed, as we did with the Office, only difference was we never laughed once during Extras.
Rob from Rugby
Enjoyed the first episode very much. I only had one full belly-laugh though. I think the show will improve in itself and in peoples mind's as the following episodes are broadcast. I have faith that Ricky Gervais will pull another one out of the bag. Well done Ricky!
Alun
You don't get it! it's funny because it's bland. Life is bland and the little remarks like "herman munster" foot is what people actually say! Boring but funny
Ian
Similar style of comedy as the Office, but still good. Unsurprisingly Andy is pretty similar to Brent, with the same aspirations of greatness. I was however surprised that some of Stiller's lines (like his first diatribe about why he's making the film) could have also come straight out of the mouth of Brent. Still very good, and some of the more embarrassing moments had me cringing as much, if not more, than when watching the Office.
Justin Bennett
I am sorry to say that i will NOT be watching it again as i did not find it at all entertainong or funny. Ben Stiller was a disapointment.
Jimmy
I was somewhat disappointed with the 1st episode, but have every faith in Ricky and Stephen that overall the series will be better. These boys know a thing or two about comedy!
mike
brilliant, not as good as the office but definitely the next best thing. Flanimals is probably third.
Carl Lovick
Yet another reason why we find uncomfortable viewing hilarious Ricky and Stephen have another success on their hands i can't wait til Thursday
Joris Henquet
this series proves that Gervais and Merchant are absolute geniuses in writing dialogues. I loved the first episode.
Anna
Being a huge fan of the comic genious, iam going to keep open-minded about "extas", but then again, i dont think a good show can just be based upon the 'stars' in it, but the talent that is displayed...but yes i have to aggree after the office its hard to match that fantastic series!!!-gervais keep up the good work!!
Nathan
I think the only word that comes anywhere near summing up my immense disappointment is 'Why?' Why did they do it?
Raffaela
Brilliant! Obviously....
vin
took a while to get going so we will see. Although after the Office people are probably going to expect too much, so it wouldn't ne a bad thing if it wasn't a storming success
Aminda
Hilarious! Stop comparing it with the Office, its a different programme!
Rob
Interesting. Not what i was expecting but still very good. Ricky's character, while still having Brent-isms which is understandable, i think was different in many ways and worked well. The whole show is much more mainstream than the office and quite American in it's style but Gervais admits that that's where a lot of his inspiration comes from. And as for Ben Stiller, i don't think there is another American comic who understands British humour better except maybe Mike Myers. Another winner? Raitings wise maybe not but effortwise definitely!
Wayne Howard
I thought it was a fresh idea, of course Ricky will not be able to escape the persona of the Office. Ricky's strong comedy stlye will no doubt bring similarities as David Brent!!
Extra's has a raw stlye to it which makes it funny.
It's good that their are a variety of well known and unknown actors which is perfect as the jokes involved everyone.
Just one question though where did that actor with the club foot buy his shoes...hmmmm.
Bucktron
All the laughs came from Gervaise, Ben Stillers self-mockery routine has been done before and done better. I'm surprised that Gervaise and Merchant let such a weak self-conscious gag into their script. Gervaise is a joy to watch as Millman, he looks so comfortable.
steven
fantastic! anyone who thinks it's disappointing needs to accept the fact that the office has finished and get over it. As for Mr Gervais playing the same character, who cares? nobody complains when billy connelly or eddie izzard gets up on stage and essentially play the same character night after night (for thirty years in the big yins case) long live brent!!
Miles
I thought it was good, but I'm not sure Ricky Gervais should have played the main character - he's great, but in my mind I can't detach him from David Brent.
Hool
Love it. To compare it with the Office is wrong. Ricky was great as Millman waiting for his dinner to cool down :) amd that woman who stars with him is bloody great. Looking forward to more!
Ian glover
Perhaps its too soon after such a massive hit as the office, but it just doesnt work! Lets give it a chance and lets hope it gets better
Ricky
Extras was always going to struggle to live up to the hype, however it was a good first episode in my opinion. I think people should give it a few more episodes to get to know the characters and the point of the show, then many of the jokes will become easier to understand.
ryan p
average. maybe too early to judge. certainly didn't have many memorable lines or moments though.
Lara
Give it time. It's one of those things that needs repeat viewings and several episodes to really make its mark.
KrisDB
Its not fair to compare it to The Office, you have to think of them as two totally different shows with the actor. Also, I like how the Financial Times gives it a bad review. The bastion of comedic expertise that they are.
Becca L
I enjoyed it- the main characters were likeable, and there were some cracking lines. But some points were too cringe-worthy. As good as The Office? It could be...
Ben Smith
I would disagree with the Daily Express. I thought that Ben Stiller, while providing a few laughs, did not have the natural style of Gervais. It turns out that Ben Stiller, even while playing Ben Stiller, can only act one character.
John Putland
"The disappointing follow up to The Office."
B****r, the joke has turned true.
dan
Did anyone else notice Ricky is playing rather a similar character? I think he should have tried something a little more challenging. Then again, when you're onto a winner...
Raj Sawhney
I thought it was fantastic, mainly due to the fact that i too am a part-time extra on television, and of course because of the brilliant Mr. Gervais.
It was not only hilarious but also gave the viewers an insight into the little known life of the non-speaking but ever hopeful film extra.
Bring on the second series already i say !!
Yvonne
Disappointing!
