"My brief from Toby MacDonald was to visualise key dramatic moments in the script, drawing on the original film references.
It is perhaps interesting to note that I did not visit the set or location at all. I worked solely from the scripts and visual material provided (occasionally creating miniature sets 'peopled' with wooden anatomical figures or utilising obliging friends for actions and expressions!)
Initially I familiarised myself with the characters and scenarios - both in Mark Chappell's scripts and the original films. I watched the films, drawing freely as they ran, to get a feel for the visual rhythm. I then set about creating visual compositions and frames of action that conveyed the energy and physicality of the "My Life in Film" characters, and the atmosphere, textures and energies of the original films. Always bearing in mind Toby's maxim of homage not parody, and continually cross referencing until I felt "My Life in Film" was developing its own rhythm and sense of identity."
