Strange Encounters

Steve chats with Karl Spain, Aaron Barschak and a rather rude man...

Outside the Gilded Balloon Library Bar, chatting to a comedy producer, when a well-dressed man I don't recognise approaches and asks: "Steve Bennett?"

"Yes, hi," I reply, shaking the hand he offered me. This sort of unannounced greeting happens all the time in this insular world.

"You are such a w****r," then disappears without explanation.

I'm baffled, and can only think it's the first review I've received, rather than given. Four stars ain't bad - even if they are only used to asterix out the word he actually said.

Inside, I chat to Irish comic Karl Spain about Tommy Tiernan's untouchable genius; Comedy Terrorist Aaron Barschak, who has shunned the peach ballgown in favour of a linen suit, about the film he made of his disastrous Edinburgh appearance last year; and director John Gordillo, who's a bit disillusioned with the fringe already even though everyone knows the festival funk isn't scheduled to descend until Week Two.

To bed at 3am, an hour after I'd hoped, but two earlier than I'd feared, but giving me at least a shot at a decent night's sleep. Get it while I can...
