Collections: Best of Web Comedy 2009

BBC Comedy has always had a presence on television and radio, but 2009 saw us moving into new and exciting places. We released exclusive material on the Red Button, normally the home of Glastonbury and Wimbledon, but now a new playground for Stewart Lee, Armando Iannucci, Mitchell and Webb and others. Then in April we launched BBC Comedy, a dedicated space for comedy talent to try new things online.

Here's our pick from the 400 odd comedy clips and videos that were published in 2009. You can see bedroom pioneers like David Firth and Harry Partridge alongside more established names like Stephen Fry & Morwenna Banks. Adam Buxton played fast and loose with the BBC Archive, most memorably the 2009 World Snooker Championships. Facebook users picked up on Brian Blessed's Henry 8.0 and set up fangroups like 'the king of France has a face like a beggar's ballbag'. Much loved radio formats like Just A Minute and That Mitchell and Webb Sound were animated, proving or disproving the theory that radio is like television except with better pictures. There were stunts with axes and fireworks courtesy of The Amazing Wizards, Top Gun was remade in a school playground by sketch act Broken Biscuits and we saw X Factor voiceover man Peter Dickson in his jim-jams.
