Comic Relief produced the highest on the night total in its 21 year history on Red Nose Day, 13 March. As the evening's entertainment drew to a close, a phenomenal £59,187,065 had been raised to help poor and vulnerable people in the UK and Africa.
Comedy greats, entertainment stars and the public all joined in to Do Something Funny for Money to support the 12th Red Nose Day.
The amazing total goes to show that even in a time of economic slump, people still found a way to dig deep and give generously to transform lives across the UK and in Africa.
Celebrity climbers Alesha Dixon, Ben Shephard, Cheryl Cole, Chris Moyles, Denise Van Outen, Fearne Cotton, Gary Barlow, Kimberley Walsh and Ronan Keating greatly contributed to the total. Not only did they endure days of gruelling physical torture to reach the top of Mount Kilimanjaro but the public got behind them to sponsor their efforts and they raised an impressive £3,326,142 for Comic Relief in the process! Each year, BBC audiences raise an average of £70m, benefiting hundreds of charities across the UK and overseas.
