How much is raised and where the money goes

In 2008-9, the BBC, with your help, raised millions of pound for charities throughout the UK. Thank you!

Here's a list of the appeals which took place or were reported on in 2008-9.

Because the charities connected to the appeals have different financial years and different reporting cycles (some biennial), not all the appeals took place during the financial year 2008-09.

The appeals included

BBC Children in Need

BBC Children in Need raised £38,000,000 in 2008-09.

Sports Relief 2008

In 2008, Sports Relief, run by Comic Relief in partnership with the BBC, raised £28,500,000.

Comic Relief/Red Nose Day 2007

In 2007, Red Nose Day, run by Comic Relief in partnership with the BBC, raised £67,700,000.

Blue Peter Mission Nutrition Appeal

Blue Peter viewers have raised more than £192,000 in 2008-09, however these figures are provisional, as although the appeal has finished, the account was open until December and final donations have yet to be counted.

Blue Peter Disc Drive Appeal with Barnardo's

Blue Peter viewers raised more than £675,000 for Barnardo's in 2007-08 through the re-sale of CDs and DVDs and the money is still coming in. Over 575,000 discs have been collected so far, providing help and support for young carers.

BBC Wildlife Fund

The BBC Wildlife Fund has raised £1,776,619 to support projects working with endangered species.

BBC Performing Arts Fund 2008-09
(formerly Fame Academy Bursary Trust)

The Performing Arts Fund does not run appeals, but receives income from voting on BBC programmes.

In the period 2008-09 the BBC Performing Arts Fund raised £700,530.

Radio 4 Appeal

In the year 2008-09, the BBC Radio 4 Appeal raised more than £1.36m for 52 charities working in the UK and overseas. More than £704,000 of this came from donations to the St Martins in the Fields Christmas Appeal. Some listeners make regular donations to the Radio Four Appeal Fund by setting up a monthly, quarterly or annual standing order or by cheque. The money collected through the Fund is divided equally amongst the charities featured each year.

Lifeline Appeal

In 2008-09 BBC One's Lifeline Appeal raised more than £173,000 for 12 charities working in the UK and overseas. The average donation was £45.

In 2007-08 BBC One's Lifeline Appeal raised more than £137,000 for 12 charities working in the UK and overseas. The average donation was £34.

BBC Northern Ireland

In addition to raising money for the charities listed below, BBC Northern Ireland broadcast its annual Christmas Family Appeal, run by The Salvation Army and St Vincent de Paul, providing gifts to more than 12,000 children.

BBC Wales

In Wales, Appeals were made on radio, television and the internet to support the following charities, to raise awareness of their work and to recruit volunteers.

In England, 13 BBC Local Radio Stations raised money and other resources for a wide range of local charities.

Each year, BBC audiences raise around £100m, benefiting hundreds of charities across the UK and overseas.
