The Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), an umbrella organisation for 13 major UK humanitarian aid agencies, has launched an emergency appeal to get vital help to people affected by the earthquakes and typhoons that have struck in the last week.
First typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines and also affected the wider region including Vietnam leaving hundreds of thousands of people without food or shelter.
Then an earthquake struck Indonesia measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale. The aftershock measured 6.6. Homes were literally 'swallowed up'. Hospitals and schools were destroyed.
The DEC charities are working to help these people. In the Philippines hundreds have been rescued from buildings. In Vietnam DEC agencies are giving out bottled water and basic foodstuffs. In Indonesia hundreds of volunteers have been involved in search and rescue operations.
