Get busy making Nina's whizzy wipers.
What to do:
Carefully cut out all the shapes around the dotted lines. Watch out as scissors can be sharp.
Glue the shapes onto the cardboard and cut out around them. This can be fiddly so you may want to ask an adult for help.
All of the shapes have white dots in their centres, where holes need to be made. To punch small holes into these dots: put a blob of moulding clay on your table; place the piece of card, with the dot on it, on top; align the dot with the clay beneath and, using the pointed end of the pencil, carefully puncture a hole in the card. This will make a tidy hole. Repeat for all the shapes.
Carefully thread the paper fastener through hole 'B' in the rod shape. This can be fiddly.
Ask an adult to pierce a hole in the middle of the plastic bottle top. Attach the bottle top, flat side down to the card, and when the fastener is in the correct position, fix it down, add a washer, and secure: this will help the wheel work.
It's important that the fastener is flush with the cardboard, so stick a small piece of tape onto the washer at the back of the wheel shape to help it move smoothly.
Attach the crank wheel shape to the base (printable shape 3) using a fastener and washer (through the two corresponding holes labelled 'A'). This can be fiddly so take your time.
Make sure that the rod shape sticks out at the side of the crank wheel so it looks similar to a table tennis bat. Use the bottle top to turn your crank wheel and rod.
To make the wipers use the remaining shapes from printable sheet 2. First place 'wiper 2' on the left and 'wiper 1' on the right beside it. Place the 'bridge' shape on top and align the holes 'E' and 'D' with the labelled holes 'E' and 'D' in the wiper shapes beneath.
Thread two paper fasteners, with washers, through the holes 'E' and 'D' and carefully secure at the back of the cardboard. The wipers should now look like the capital letter 'H' but with one longer leg on the right. Well done on making your wipers.
The wipers need to be connected to the base (printable shape 3). Line up the wipers to the base using the holes 'G' and 'F' as a guide. Carefully place a fastener and washer through hole 'G', and 'wiper 2' and secure at the back of the card. Repeat with 'wiper 1' shape and hole 'F'.
Finally attach the wipers to the rod using the two holes labelled 'C', in the rod and 'wiper 1'. Secure with a fastener and washer.
Turn the crank wheel round and the wipers will move from side to side. Well done inventors – you've created your wonderful wipers!
