Spiced Fun Buns
Makes 8. Recipe devised by Kate Morris and Sally Brown.
This should take about 45 mins
You will need:
- 3 dessertspoons currants
- 1 dessertspoon chopped peel
- 2 dessertspoons caster sugar
- 110 g self-raising flour
- large pinch of mixed spice
- 60 g soft butter
- 1 egg (but you will not need all of it)
Remember to ask a Grown-up for help.
What to do:
Step 1
You will need - workmat, measuring jug, scales, tablespoon, teaspoon , baking tray, baking paper, oven gloves (for adult use).
Step 2
Wash your hands and put an apron on. Weigh or measure all the ingredients. Ask a grown-up to preheat the oven to 180°C Fan/200°C/gas mark 6. Put some baking paper on the baking tray.
Step 3
Put the currants, chopped peel and sugar in a bowl.
Step 4
In another bowl, weigh the flour and add the mixed spice and butter. Rub in (tickle) the butter and flour and spice together until the mixture looks like fine breadcrumbs.
Step 5
Add the sugar, fruit and peel to the flour bowl and mix with the fork – just a few gentle stirs.
Step 6
Break the egg into the cup and beat with the fork then add some (but not all) to your fruity mixture. The mixture should be firm enough to shape but not dry. Add a bit more egg if it is too dry to shape.
Step 7
Using your hands, tear the mixture in half, then in half again then each piece in half until you have eight pieces. Now, without shaping them, (leaving them rough) place them onto the baking tray. Ask a grown-up to put them in the oven to bake for 15-20 minutes. Serve the buns with some fresh fruit.
