Big City Park

Join a group of explorers in the Big City Park as they play games, use their imagination and search for special things.

Big City Park

In every episode the characters welcome a new group of excited young explorers to Big City Park for an adventure-filled day - gathering treasures, playing games, using their imagination and collecting really special things to keep in Ruairi's Treasure chest.

The show is set in Belfast's Ormeau Park, a beautiful busy public park in the centre of Belfast. The entire series is filmed outdoors, capturing the changing park in all weather - rain, hail, sleet and sunshine.

Big City Park is all about adventure - finding nature's hidden treasure, great storytelling and loads of fun and imagination.

The educational value of the show

Read about the characters

May

May is the warm, friendly and caring park keeper that everyone loves. As well as looking after the park, it's her job to welcome the children and to gently guide them on their adventure. May is a great source of fun activities and knows loads of great games to play. She really loves nature, being outdoors and getting her hands and wellies muddy. May says that she has the best job in the world because there's something new to see every day, new sounds to listen out for and new experiences to enjoy with her friends. No two days are the same in Big City Park!

Ruari

Ruairi is the park's caretaker. He's funny, friendly, mischievous and loves to entertain. He has a big imagination and his really special skill is helping the children to use their imagination in the setting of the park - to see a canoe instead of a fallen tree, to see tea cups for field mice instead of acorn cases and hear ladybirds getting ready for a party instead of the sound of rustling leaves. Ruairi has lived in Big City Park for a very, very long time (we're really not sure how old he is). He likes nothing better than performing to an audience and making people laugh with his silly jokes and funny pranks. Ruairi knows lots of stories, rhymes and songs and is delighted when the children arrive at his Story circle and it's his time to shine! He's very proud of his job as the park's caretaker and keeper of the Treasure chest and gets very excited when the children ask him to keep some of their treasures from their day's adventures for other children to enjoy.

The children

The children are integral to each show and bring it to life with their imagination and personalities. Children aged between three and six visit Big City Park in each episode, and the children add a huge amount of humour and excitement to the experience of being in Big City Park.

Other characters

Billy the badger is young, excitable and enthusiastic. He's also forgetful and a little bit naïve. He's a badger who loves Big City Park and loves the kids who come to visit. He can't resist joining the treasure hunt through the park and is the first one to suggest an impromptu game of hide and seek - any excuse to snuffle around in the leaves and make everybody laugh.

Dara the fox is a city explorer - a fox who knows both the big city and the park like the back of her hand. Inquisitive, sharp-witted and intelligent, Dara loves being responsible for fetching the children from their houses across the city and bringing them into the park. Dara gets very excited at the thought of another day of adventure. She loves to help out.
