You can make the long A sound (the same as its name) with the digraph ai (sail) or with ay (say). You can make the long E sound with ee (bee) or with ea (beat). And so on.
It is also time to meet split digraphs (such as a_e, as in game and cake) – letter teams that are separated but still make the long vowel sounds. In Alphablocks, the character Magic E teams up with another vowel with a magic beam that joins them and shows how they work together to make the long vowel sound.
Finally, we also learn that some letters (or letter teams) make more than one sound. Y can behave like a vowel in words such as try and happy. C and G make soft sounds in ice and cage. This goes for letter teams too: OW can make glow as well as cow.
To have fun with long vowels, your child can play the Alphablocks episodes online: choose the blue episodes.
