Tummy time for babies

By Naomi Sherwood. Give your baby some tummy time - it helps them see their surroundings from a different perspective and promotes physical development.

Introduction

Young babies should sleep on their backs but, at playtimes, it's safe and fun for a baby to spend time on his or her tummy.

It's exciting for a baby, and gives them the chance to use different muscle groups as they learn to control their head and limbs, get set for crawling, and start to reach out for objects.

How CBeebies can help

All you need for a bit of fun tummy time is a space on the floor or a rug on the grass.

Don't forget the most interesting person for your baby is you! Seeing your face or hearing your voice will keep most babies happy for a few minutes. You can smile, pull funny faces or blow raspberries, or maybe sing some of your favourite CBeebies songs.

Click through to the Song Time section of the website and take your pick. Maybe choose one which has some hand or dance movements too. Your baby will love being entertained by the sight of you singing and acting out the song!

How to make a magic moment

The most important thing is probably to make sure your baby has some face-to-face contact at the beginning of tummy time.

This is easy if you're balancing a newborn baby on your tummy and chest but, with older babies, you may need to go down to floor level so they can see you smile.

Sing their favourite song (or yours), crinkle an empty crisp packet to make a noise or pull some silly faces and see if you can get a gurgle or grin of delight!

Expert opinion

Tummy time increases babies' confidence and independence, helping them to become motivated to explore their surroundings as they learn to control their bodies.

Top tips

  • Choose a time after a nap when your baby is wide awake and not too hungry. Tummy time is fun but hard work for young babies, who might want to settle with a feed and a cuddle afterwards. If you go down to your baby's level, you give them the chance to look up at your face.If your baby isn't in the mood, just try again later. All you need is a few minutes, a few times a day, to help them to develop posture and muscle control.
