Cloudbabies - About the Series

Educational consultant Dr Christine Ricci Ph.D worked alongside the production team to create an educational curriculum for the series.

Cloudbabies

Cloudbabies

Cloudbabies is an enchanting animated pre-school series following four adorable characters - Baba Pink, Baba Blue, Baba Yellow and Baba Green - whose job is to look after the sky. They live together in a house on a big fluffy cloud, and every morning they jump on their Skyhorsies and begin their day's work. From dealing with scared stars, or feeding the Moon till it’s full, the Cloudbabies work together to solve problems and keep everything just as it should be.

The series teaches children about caring for others, themselves, and the world around them, whilst introducing them to the concepts of day and night, sun and moon, rainbows and stars.

Cloudbabies helps develop and foster children’s social and emotional development and encourages them to recognise acts of empathy and kindness – demonstrating the impact that positive behaviour can have on others and the environment.

The primary curricular goals are:

Care of Self

To encourage young children’s growth of independence and self- esteem

The preschool years are vital for children’s emotional and social development as they are beginning to develop their feelings of self-worth and belonging. While gaining these self-help skills, preschool children are also gaining independence and bolstering their self-esteem. The ‘care of self’ is an important piece of their emotional and social development.

Care of Self is illustrated through Bobo White, who is a Sky Imp and the youngest member of the group. The Cloudbabies teach him, help him, and encourage him to try things for himself. Bobo White exemplifies what it’s like to be little, and how frustrating it is when you can’t do everything. Yet, he’s always willing to learn shows the young viewers how empowering it is when you finally do master a new skill. Bobo White models children’s growing independence and encourages viewers to ask for help when it is needed, and feel proud of every success.

Care of Others

To encourage young children to empathise with others and show kindness

Around age four, children become even more aware of others and their feelings by learning how to play and form friendships with their peers. They are learning to be kind and empathic through these friendships, by understanding and sharing with others. Learning how to recognize the needs of those around them, and knowing how to take care of others, is fundamental part of children’s development.

In addition, children need to be rewarded with words and actions that show appreciation for kind and thoughtful behaviour, teaching them that kindness makes them (and others) feel good. The Cloudbabies series encourages children to think about others by sharing, comforting, protecting, and encouraging the members of their world.

Care of Others is illustrated through the actions of the Cloudbabies towards each other and Bobo White. For example in Being Baba Pink, Baba Pink is too tired to do her chores, so the other Cloudbabies all pull together to do her daily jobs for her.

Care of the World

To encourage young children to see themselves as having an important role in taking care of the world

By age five, children are beginning to get more of a sense of self and they show a greater interest in their community and the world around them. They are beginning to understand how others live and work together, increasing their awareness and knowledge about themselves and their impact on their community. They see how working together allows them to accomplish bigger goals and they understand how important it is to feel valued within a group.

The Cloudbabies series encourages children to think about how they can be helpful to their family and community. It shows them that no matter how small you may be, you can help to take care of the people around you. Understanding their role and the impact that they can have in their world is paramount to becoming a responsible citizen.

Care of the World is illustrated in the way that the Cloudbabies look after their Sky Friends (Sun, Moon, Rainbow, Little Star and Fuffa Cloud) to ensure that natural order is maintained and everything in the sky is just as it should be. For example in The Right Colour to Be, Bobo White gets hold of a pot of paint and proceeds to paint Sun bright purple. The sky takes on a purple hue and Sun is unable to shine which means that the plants won’t grow. Thankfully the Cloudbabies come to the rescue and find a big cloud to rain on Sun and clean him up - finally he returns to being shiny and yellow, just as he should be.

Through the series children will realise that they too can be helpful and make a difference to others. The Cloudbabies curriculum will lay the foundation for children to take care of themselves, those around them, their community and beyond…
