Creating this key and lock will help to develop your child's knowledge and understanding of the world around them, and how things work. The activity will challenge their problem-solving skills and also help to improve their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills as they carefully cut, glue, thread and attach various materials to assemble the cardboard door handle with its lock and key. The make is a bit fiddly in places, so you will need to be on hand to help your child.
How to extend the magic
Explain to your child that keys are useful for locking things to keep them safe, eg locking your house, car, windows or bicycle. If you have a luggage key and padlock you could demonstrate how it works - and let your child have a go. Then you could have some fun together watching how the Alphablocks gang use their magic key to escape from a cage! Click through to the Alphablocks pages on the CBeebies website, select 'Watch & Listen' and then click on the video clip called 'Key'.
