This activity is great for extending your child's knowledge and understanding of the world around them, as they learn about different types of food and where they come from. It's also a good way of developing their fine motor skills as they prepare ingredients and handle utensils. And it teaches them an important life skill - how to prepare tasty, nutritious meals (and the occasional yummy treat!).
How to extend the fun
Explain that the main ingredient in flapjacks is oats. Oats are grown in fields (as a grain) and are also used to make porridge which some people eat at breakfast time, especially in the winter. You could tell your child the story of a certain little girl who ate some porridge - a girl called Goldilocks. Click through to the Story Time section, select 'Fairy Tales' on the left-hand side and then click on 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears'. Cuddle up together enjoy the story.
How to make a magic moment
Help your child to make a simple chef's hat. Take a large piece of white paper or card (which will sit like a tall tube on their head) and measure how much you'll need so it fits snugly around their forehead. Then let your child decorate the paper/card using crayons, stickers, etc. Once they've finished designing their hat, fix it together at the back with tape or staples... and you're good to go!
