Constructing this make is a great way of helping your child to develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills as they cut, fold paint and glue the paper to create the lantern. It's a bit tricky in places, so you'll need to be on hand to help out.

How to extend the magic

Explain to your child that the Hindu festival of Diwali is known as the 'festival of lights'. Homes are decorated with colourful paper lanterns and rangoli patterns and special lamps are lit. Click through to the Story Time area of the CBeebies website and select 'Seasonal'. Click on 'Diwali' to find out more about this Hindu festival.
