Carnival hat

Introduction

Constructing this make is a great way of helping your child to develop their hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills as they fold and twist the pipe cleaners, thread the beads and finally glue the decorated pipe cleaners to the headband to create the hat. They can also experiment with different colours, shapes and textures along the way. You'll need to be on hand to measure the headband and help your child staple the card together to form the finished article.

How to extend the magic

Click through to the Watch & Listen area of the CBeebies website and select 'Seasonal'. Take a look at 'Preparing for Carnival' to find out how one girl in London gets ready for the Carnival celebrations by trying on costumes and making a headdress. Ask you child what kind of outfit they would wear if they were going to Carnival. Then you could both imagine you are taking part in the parade - have a shake and shimmy to the Carnival beats!
