by Rosemary Clarke, Head of Bookstart

Average user rating 4 out of 5

child reading
  • Bookstart exists to give every child in the country a lifelong love of books.
  • Originated and managed by the charity Bookstrust, it has become the first national books-for-babies programme in the world.
  • Book sharing is an important bonding activity and has an immediate impact in helping parents to build a strong and loving relationship with their baby.
  • Research shows that communication and pre literacy skills, attention span and educational attainment will naturally follow from a love of books, stories, songs and rhymes.
  • Bookstart children can have a head start in their education as they are often more confident and are better prepared for starting school.
  • Other countries are now following the UK lead. There are now Bookstart programmes in Japan, Korea and Thailand and there is interest from Columbia, Mexico, India, Italy, Poland and Tonga.
