The horse that earned its stripes

  • No one knows why the zebra has a patterned coat. Some people think the stripes act as camouflage and others that they help the animal to keep cool.
  • No two zebras have the same markings. The stripes may help recognising other zebras.
  • The zebra communicates through changes in the position of its ears and tail as well as by squeaks and brays.
  • It can rotate its ears without moving its body to listen out for danger.
