The canary of the sea

• The beluga whale is also known as the sea canary because of the chirps, squeaks and clicking noises that it makes. These sounds can be heard from boats.
• Another name is white whale. Its white colour helps it blend in with the icy surroundings.
• Belugas are often covered in scars. These are usually caused by polar bears, which attack the whales if they become trapped in pack ice.
