SMart Makes: Batik

  • Poster paint
  • Sponge

    Go to Watch to see Kirsten and Mark making this make.

  • Choose a picture and draw it with wax crayons - we chose an African dancing scene.


  • Make sure your design fills the paper with few gaps.

  • When you have finished your picture, scrunch the paper up to create a cracked effect. Be very careful not to tear the design.

  • After you have scrunched it up, gently fold the paper out flat again and paint over it with black poster paint.
wash paint off
  • Make sure that all of the cracks in the wax are covered with paint whilst it is still wet.


  • Using a sponge, gently take off the excess paint. As the paint is revealed you will see more of the batik effect.

  • Leave it to dry, and then you will have a gorgeous batik picture!
