Got some old wax crayons lying around? Ever wanted to make your own candle? Well now you can. Upcycle your stuff and give it a go!
Make sure you get an adult to help you with your candle, as you will be dealing with hot water and melted wax.
Because this is a real flame you need to be really carefull and make sure you never leave a candle burning when you're not in the room.
When you're finished, the bowl and cookie cutters may not be useable for cooking again, so make sure you're allowed to use them before you start!
Peel the paper wrappers off the wax crayons
Snap the crayons into small pieces and place them into a heatproof bowl.
Fill the saucepan with about 5cm of water and place the bowl on top.
Put the bowl and saucepan on a hob to heat the water and melt the candles. Don't forget to ask a Parent or Guardian for help!
Place your cookie cutter shapes on a flat heat proof surface like a chopping board and place your wick in the middle of a cutter.
Using a spoon, gently stir the melted crayons and spoon the wax into the mold. Remember, the wax will be hot, so ask an adult for help.
Once the first layer of wax has set you can then add the next colour layer. While you're waiting, use some kitchen towel to wipe the bowl before repeating steps 1 and 2 with another colour.
Add different layers of wax to get different layers of colour. Make sure you wait for each layer to set before you add a new colour. You can add as many layers, in as many different colours as you want.
Once your last layer has cooled and hardened, gently pop the candle out of the cookie cutter.
Use a pair of scissors to cut the wick to the correct length.
And there you have it, a brand new wax candle!
Remember to be extra careful when lighting it and never leave a burning candle unattended. So, just place it on a small dish or tea-light holder and watch your beautiful candle light your room!
