Take the A3 sized piece of coloured card and measure 27cm across four sides to make a square. Measure 9cm across each of the 4 outer edges, marking each 9cm measurement along the way. Draw lines across to connect each mark, then your square on the card will be divided into 9 equal sections.
Cut along the lines so that you remove the four corner boxes and are left with a template that looks like a cross.
Score the lines using 2 rulers, then fold along these scored lines. You now have the basis for the outer box.
Now it’s time for the middle box. It’s exactly the same as what we did with the first one, but this time the measurements are all just slightly smaller so that it fits inside. Take your A4 sized piece of coloured card (it can be the same colour as the outer box or a different colour if you want them contrasting) and measure 21cm across four sides to make a square. Then do the same process with dividing the square - mark 7cm across each of the 4 outer edges, draw lines across to connect each mark and cut out in the same way as the first box. Then score and fold.
On to box 3 - and it's the same again but smaller measurements! Take another A4 piece of coloured card. This time go for 15cm across the four outer sides and then mark 5cm across each of the 4 sides. Again, draw lines to connect the marks, cut out, then score and fold.
It’s the final box! This needs to fit inside the last one we just marked out, so take your fourth piece of coloured A4 card and measure 12cm across four sides. Then mark out 4cm across each side and draw lines to connect. Cut out, score and fold these in the same way as before.
Now it’s time for the lid. This will hold everything together so that when it’s lifted off the top, the box opens to reveal lots of different layers. Take your final piece of coloured card and measure 13cm across four sides to make a square. Then along each edge mark 2cm, then 9cm, then 2cm again. Connect these marks with lines across.
Cut the 4 small corners from the card.
Score each edge using two rulers, fold along the scored lines and stick the corner tabs together.
This is the fun part - decorating the different sides of your box! It’s easiest to decorate each piece before you assemble it together. Use any photos or pictures that you like – it’s really nice to choose things that the person you’re sending it to will love! Make it personal to them.
Once your sides are all decorated with different photos and pictures, it’s time to assemble the box together. Do this by placing the smaller boxes within the larger ones. Place the first box at an angle.
Glue each box layer in place at the bottom
Bring all the sides together and put the lid on top to hold everything in place.
You now have a fantastic suprise box that you can give to someone special! Don't forget you can make these boxes for birthdays and any other celebrations too!
