What is a BBC iD account and how do I get one?
Having a BBC iD account means that you have a username and password that you can use to sign in to the CBBC website. There are some things on the website that you have to have an account for.
To get a BBC iD account, click on any ‘Register’ link and follow the instructions.
Only people who are under 16 are allowed to use their BBC iD account on the CBBC website.
What is a display name and how do I get one?
A ‘display name’ is a pretend nickname, like SilverSillySparkle. It’s a name for you to be known by on the CBBC website, without having to tell anyone your real name.
When you have a BBC iD account, you need to get a display name before you can post comments on the website or use the My CBBC page. If you try to do one of these things without a display name, the website will send you to a page where you choose one.
You can choose which three words go in your display name. The website starts by picking a name for you and you can then use the ‘keep’ buttons to hang onto the words you want and use the ‘refresh’ button next to the name to change the words you don't want to keep. When you have kept three words, just click ‘Register’ to make the name yours!
What’s the difference between a username and a display name?
A username is the name you choose when you start your account. You use your username when you log in. Your username can contain your real name or any words that you like. Other children from the CBBC website never see this name.
A display name is the name that you’re known by on the CBBC website. It lets you have an identity on the website without revealing your real name.
Why do I need a display name before I can use My CBBC or CBBC Comments?
You need a display name so that we have a name to show next to your high scores and comments on the website. We can’t show your username because this might contain your real name and it’s against the rules to reveal your real name on the CBBC website.
What if I forget my password or it doesn’t work?
If your password doesn't work it might be because the computer is being fussy about capital letters and lower case letters. Check you’re using the right type of big and small letters.
If you’re definitely entering the right password and it's still not working or if you've forgotten your password then it may be possible to reset your password if you entered an email address when you signed up for your account.
If you didn't enter an email address when you signed up then we're sorry but you'll have to register again as we can't give out passwords for security reasons.
What if I forget my username?
Although this is annoying, we cannot send out your account details for safety reasons. You'll need to make a new account with a new name. Unfortunately this will mean you will have a new CBBC display name and will have to post messages under your new name. To stop it happening again, write your password and username in two separate, secret places that only you know about.
Why do I need to sign in to the CBBC website?
There is lots you can do on the CBBC website without signing in but some things don’t work without a BBC iD account.
When you sign in you can:
• Save scores and achievements in games
• Use the My CBBC page to see which games you’ve played most recently
• Post comments on the website
There are two main reasons that we ask you to sign in for these things. One is that we need a way to remember you from one website visit to the next. We can only do that if you sign in. Another reason that we ask you to sign in to post comments is so that we can help keep you safe by checking who is writing messages.
What do you do with the information that I give when I sign up?
We do not store any more data than we need or share your data with anyone else. If you or your parent or guardian want to know more about how the BBC uses any personal details please see online at www.bbc.co.uk/privacy .
If you would like your details removed from the CBBC website please contact the CBBC Website team.
Why can't I register?
If you have any difficulties in registering please wait and try again. It could be that the website is very busy. If you find that after a few attempts it still isn't working please get in contact with us by emailing email@example.com
