Stephanie used to think that things were straightforward and dull. However, when her uncle, a famous writer, dies in suspicious circumstances, she begins to discover a world beyond our own that she never knew existed. A fairy tale weapon, a society of powerful mages, a mysterious key, vampire security guards and even a hideous, canary-yellow car await her as she joins forces with her uncle's old friend, the skeleton detective Skullduggery Pleasant, to crack the case, find the culprits and - quite possibly - save the world.
I don't think I've enjoyed an adventure story this much in years. From the fast-flowing dialogue to the beautifully paced action sequences, Landy makes sure that every single word in the first Skullduggery Pleasant story counts. Stephanie & Skul are fantastically realised characters that you root for from the moment their lives intertwine during a terrifying breaking-and-entering scene, which sets the 'terror’ bar quite high, only for it to be raised even higher as the supernatural world the author has created comes vividly to life. A great villain, wonderful supporting characters and a real sense of fun make this a book one I not only recommend, but urge you to read.
