So Louis Walsh wants to build a band bigger than One Direction? One Direction are without doubt the world’s biggest boyband - and with JLS hanging up their mics at the end of the year, the road to the top of the charts is wide open for the boys.
But Louis has a history of finding chart-topping boybands. He hasn’t had much success mentoring the groups on The X Factor over the years, but it was Mr Walsh who launched Ireland’s biggest-selling boybands Boyzone and Westlife in the 90s and 00s. It won’t be easy knocking 1D off their perch but if one man can, Louis can!

I’s feeling a little more like summer and the sun is making an effort to come out…. And what does that mean? Festival season! Music lovers across the UK will be flocking to as many music festivals as they can and one of the biggest this year will be Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Londonderry. All types of music, from folk to rap will be on from the likes of Labrinth, Little Mix, Paramore and more! You can listen to the whole thing online, and see it on BBC Three and red button. I know I’ll be watching!

If this was the year you thought you might hear less of Emeli Sandé…then think again!
Earlier this year she announced that she’d be taking time out in 2013 to work on a new album. But it’s her debut album that’s making headlines again. ‘Our Version of Events’ was released in February last year and, well, it never left! The album has now broken the record for the longest debut run in the UK Album Chart’s Top Ten.
It’s spent 63 consecutive weeks at the top of the charts, breaking the record set by The Beatles back in the sixties - a phenomenal achievement that goes to show just how popular a performer Emeli Sandé really is.

Weird robots and futuristic helmets - to look at them you’d think Daft Punk were straight out of a sci-fi movie. In fact they were – in 2010’s Tron Legacy!
But these guys are French DJ legends. Their latest single ‘Get Lucky’, from the album Random Access Memories, has broken the record for the most listened to song in a day on Spotify.
It’s their first single in 8 years and experts think the album could be the biggest of the year! Daft Punk then, aren’t so daft after all.

Just when ‘Gangnam Style’ began to feel like a distant memory, Psy returns with another catchy song-and-dancemove combo.
The South Korean pop star has released his new single called ‘Gentleman.’ The new video features Psy pulling pranks on people while breaking into a brand new (and just as bonkers) dance routine during the chorus.
Over 50 million people have already watched the clip online. Towards the end of last year one billion people had watched the official Gangnam Stlye video online. Can Psy match his previous record or is he just a one (super) hit wonder?!

So... I go away from the UK for 2 weeks filming, and come back to a surprising chart topper. I really couldn’t believe my ears when I heard that a song released nearly 20 years ago was the new number one. Don’t get me wrong… I LOVE Ant and Dec. They and their shows are brill - but to see 'Let's Get Ready To Rhumble' hold off pop royalty like Justin Timberlake and P!nk really did say something… If at first you don’t succeed… rhumble all over again! OK, so they’ve dropped to number 6 in the chart now – but still, well done guys!

It’s a big deal for artists to get the golden No. 1 and The Saturdays deserve it! They started recording music in 2008 and have stayed near the top of the charts since - but it’s taken 5 years of hard work and now their song What About Us has done it. It’s not like they haven’t been successful - they've had 11 UK top 10 singles and sold more than 2 million records. I think this achievement shows that hard work and determination can pay off - and I really mean pay off, as their song’s become the fastest-selling single of the year so far with 114,000 copies sold. Bravo ladies!

This week the giants of UK and USA music will begin to share a stage of a different kind! A new label has been launched combining Virgin Records and Mercury Records called Virgin EMI Records! It will mean stars such as Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift will be under the same label as British chart-topper Emeli Sande and king of rock Sir Elton John. So will we see more collaborations? The label have said they plan to be one of the biggest in the UK and help new talent to flourish. So watch out for some big British Stars coming your way – like the Scottish trio Chvrches, whom the label are launching later this year.

Things seem to have gone from bad to worse for Justin Bieber.
First off he was criticised for keeping fans waiting in London, then he had to be treated by doctors after suffering breathing problems during his concert at London's O2 Arena. But after telling his fans he was OK he set off to Portugal only to cancel the second night of his concert due to "unforeseen circumstances".
But he reassured his fans in the UK that he’ll be back:
“i will be back. and i will see u again. and I am grateful for all of u. U are what made some of the other stuff ;) worth it."

On Saturday I took part in ‘Let’s Dance for Comic Relief’ alongside ex-Newsrounder Sonali Shah, dancing to the hit song ‘Hey Ya’ by OutKast. It’s easily one of the most fun things I’ve ever had the chance to do and hopefully we helped inspire you to ‘Do Something Funny for Money’ and raise lots of cash for Comic Relief.
I now know why at the end of every episode of Strictly Come Dancing Bruce and Tess say “Keeep Dancing!” because once you’ve had a taste of it you just can’t stop.

So congratulation to the One Direction boys as they celebrate another number one hit in the UK. This time with their Comic Relief single! Whatever you make of them they have come a long way since they auditioned individually on the X-Factor back in 2010. Three years later they rocked up to the Brit Awards picking up the Global Success Award. Newsround’s Ricky caught up with them on the red carpet and Zayn told him that the 1D boys are rehearsing in Yorkshire ahead of their big tour and Zayn in particular is loving being home because he misses his mum! Aaaah!

Who said Politicians were boring – not me! And certainly not One Direction as their Comic Relief single features a special guest appearance by Prime Minister David Cameron. And he’s said that all the VAT money that would usually go to the government will be given to Comic relief!
And if you feel like something’s missing from this summer now that there’s no Olympics taking over the country, then do not fear! Because the top pop ‘Wireless Festival’ is set to bring the Olympic stadium back to life as Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z have announced that they’re headline there in July! – I wonder if they will incorporate the Mo-Bot into their routine

Adele continues her reign over the American pop charts. Last night the pop star won another Grammy award, this time for Best Pop Solo Performance. She can add that award to the five she won last year. Adele is certainly on a roll…
There’s more good news for British artists. Last year the likes of One Direction and Mumford & Sons helped British music secure its largest share of the US albums market for 10 years. That means loads of albums bought by Americans in 2012 were by UK acts.
The Saturday’s are currently in America hoping to join the British pop invasion. The Wanted, Ed Sheeran and even Cher Lloyd have set their sights on a US number one!

This week the Cassette tape became 50 years old. I used to listen to them when I was at school, (before CDs were invented) and I was a big fan of the band Blondie! Obviously One Direction are fans too as today they announced their Comic Relief track as a cover of Blondie’s ‘One Way or Another’ – an absolutely banging tune – out 17th February.
Another favourite of mine when I was at school was Beyoncé in her girl group Destiny’s Child. So you can imagine my glee when they reunited and sang at the Super Bowl this weekend. Truly amazing –took my back to those cassette days all over again!

It’s only been two months but I’m already missing the X Factor. My weekends haven’t been the same without Dermot saying, “Your Saturday night starts right here!” Lucky for me the X Factor Tour is underway and started right here in Manchester!
The line-up includes Rylan and Union J and Newsround’s Nel got to meet runner-up Jahmene Douglas and Ella Henderson. They talked about what life’s been like after the TV show… I wonder how James Arthur would answer that question?
Since the show ended James’s success has been amazing! His debut single ‘Impossible’ was the fastest-selling single of 2012, it was the first Number 1 of 2013 and recently notched up 1 million UK sales.

The soundtrack to the new musical Les Miserables has become the first recording by a film cast to top the UK album chart in 16 years. This does not surprise me as the singing in the movie is brilliant!
I think lots of soundtracks are overlooked by music lovers. I listen to a lot of movie music (geek!) and I love John Williams (Star Wars, Harry Potter) and Hans Zimmer (Lion King, The Dark Knight). For me, soundtracks to movies can go beyond the films they were made for. I woke up singing the main song from Les Mis the morning after so believe me movie music is great!

Good news for Britney. The last time Miss Spears was number one in the UK was way back in 2004 with the hit single ‘Everytime.’ Fast forward a few years, add a bit of Will-i-am and voila! Britney has another hit on her hands.
‘Scream & shout’ was released just before Christmas but the song has finally pushed The X Factor winner James Arthur off the top spot, selling more than 400,000 copies since its release.
In other news, Britney has quit The X Factor USA because she wants to spend more time recording in the studio. The singer was a judge on the last series, but some critics said she was a bit boring!

With the New Year in full swing I always like to take a look at the UK charts and ask questions like who has staying power and will be here this time next year?
At the moment we have X-Factor winner James Arthur riding high in the top spot with his debut single Impossible. I’m expecting big things from James this year and I’d love to see him collaborating with someone like Labrinth - a credible musician who would fit perfectly on Mr Arthur’s album.
And don’t tell anyone but I’m also hoping PSY doesn’t disappear just yet we all need something as addictive as Gangnam style to get us through the grey winter months!

So X Factor’s James Arthur is back at number one in the last singles’ charts of 2012! Who should we be looking out for in the world of music in 2013? Well here’s one name for you… singer-songwriter Tom Odell.
Tom’s been tipped to become a massive success after winning the Brit Critics’ Choice Award 2013. You may know of the person who won the same award last year – Emili Sande! Yep, she went on to have the biggest-selling album of the year and perform at the London 2012 Olympics!
Seems 22-year-old Tom has a lot to look forward to in 2013! And we hope you do too! Happy New Year from the Newsround team!
