Jelly Volcano

Step 1

making jelly in a jug

This is a science experiment and not safe to eat.

Break up the jelly cubes into a jug and pour in hot water - ask an adult to help you with this. Only use half the amount of water that the instructions on the packet tell you to. This should be roughly one pint.

Step 2

putting modelling clay in to a funnel.

Put the funnel into a cup with the nozzle facing down, and block up the nozzle with some modelling clay. Then spread a little oil all over the inside of the funnel - this is so you can get the jelly volcano out easily when it is set.

Step 3

Pour the jelly into the funnel

Pour the jelly into the funnel and put it in the fridge, or somewhere cool until it has set.

Step 4

red jelly on a plate.

When the jelly has set put a plate over the top of the funnel, and turn upside down carefully - you might need some help with this as the jelly will be heavier now it has set. If the jelly doesn't come out easily you can help it out by sliding a spatula down the sides of the funnel.

Step 5

scoop the top of the jelly out using a spoon.

Now you have the body of your jelly volcano, use a spoon and carefully scoop out about 2 inches of the jelly from the centre. This will be the volcano's crater.

Step 6

pour baking soda on the top of the jelly.

Use a spoon or a test tube to fill the crater with baking soda.

Step 7

add vinegar to the top of the volcano.

Fill a test tube or a small glass with vinegar, and add a few drops of food colouring to it. Then slowly pour the vinegar and food colouring mixture into the crater.

Step 8

jelly volcano erupting!

Watch your jelly volcano erupt - but please do not eat it!

You will need:

  • A packet of jelly
  • Bicarbonate of soda
  • A plastic funnel
  • A glass or a test tube
  • Modelling clay
  • Vinegar
  • Food colouring
  • A jug
  • Vegetable or cooking oil
  • A spoon or a pipette
  • This is a fun and messy experiment, so make sure you cover the area around your jelly volcano with lots of old newspaper.
