Super Suction

What to do:

  1. Take one plastic lid or film container and gently squash it so that it goes from being round, to sausage shaped.
  2. Place the open end somewhere on your body - to be safe it's best to avoid your face.
  3. While holding the container in place, gently squash the other sides of it so the container goes back to being round again.
  4. Let go and the container should be stuck to your skin.
  5. If it hurts, squash the container again and gently pull it off. Try again, but this time, don't squash the container so much.
  6. Once you have one container stuck on, see if you can stick another...and another...and another...!
  7. Get your friend to try as well, who can stick on the most containers?

The Science

Believe it or not, it is only the power of air that is sticking the cup to your body. When you squash the cup you are pushing a little bit of air out of it, meaning there is less air inside the cup than when you started. Then when you make the cup go back to its starting shape, the air that is inside it has more space to fill than when the cup was squashed. So, the air spreads out to fill this space which means it's at a lower pressure than the air on the outside of the cup.

Air with higher pressure has more pushing power. So the high pressure air on the outside pushes on the cup, keeping it stuck to your skin.

You Will Need

  • 10 Empty photo film containers (you can get these from any shop that develops photographs) or clear thin plastic lids (like those you get on hair mouse or shaving foam cans)
  • You
  • A friend

Safety

Do not stick the containers over your mouth or eyes - it's best to avoid your face altogether. Make sure the containers don't have any sharp edges on them. To remove the containers simply squeeze them and gently pull.
