Mini Science @ Home - Eggy Stool
Try your hand at making your very own Mini Miss home egg stool!

Try your hand at making your very own Mini Miss egg stool at home.

Eggy Stool

What to do:

  1. Weigh the items and make a note of how heavy they are.
  2. Place the egg cups on a table.
  3. Place the eggs in the egg cups.
  4. Now, position the eggs and egg cups so that you can balance the large book on top of them with one egg acting like a 'leg' at each corner of the book. The egg being used as a stool leg
  5. Choose an item and place it on the book - watch the eggs and see if they crack - hopefully they won't.
  6. One at a time, put the rest of the items on the book. See how many you can place on the book without the eggs cracking. Placing objects on top of the stool
  7. Try it again using new eggs, this time use the lighter items first - can you now put more items on the book without the eggs cracking?

The Science

When you place items on the book, their weight is pushing down on the eggs. You might think this would make the eggs crack straight away, but eggs are actually surprisingly strong. The force of the push from the items is actually spread all around the egg's surface, meaning that it doesn't crack - hopefully.

Also, here we are using 4 eggs, so each egg is only taking ¼ of the weight of the items, which is why you can put more items on the 'eggy stool' than you might have expected.

You Will Need

  • 4 identical egg cups
  • 4 eggs of the same size
  • A large hard backed book
  • Lots of objects of different weights

Safety

Make sure that all the objects you use to place on the book, you can lift easily without hurting yourself.

Remember that this experiment could get messy if the eggs crack. So do this somewhere safe and do not do this on a glass table.
