Tracy Beaker Returns: Saffron Coomber Interview
How did you get involved in Tracy Beaker Returns?
“My agent sent me to an audition for Tracy Beaker Returns when I was 14. When I first got the email to say I’d got the part I was so excited because I used to watch The Story of Tracy Beaker when I was younger.”
What can viewers expect from the new series?
“Viewers can expect excitement, tension and humour. This series is grittier than the last, so expect many surprises!”
How long did it take to make the new series?
“It took three months to film the new series. Filming took place over the summer holidays, starting in early July and finishing in early October.”
Is it hard learning lines? What are your tricks of the trade?
“At first, remembering lines can be difficult. However, you tend to get used to learning the lines and your brain manages to absorb them after a while. Preparing the night before for the scenes you’re in the next morning always helps.”
You all seem to be having so much fun on set – is that true?
“It can be fun on set and we can have a laugh and joke around, but it is still our workplace. Sometimes there is time to be a bit laid back and have a giggle, but we always have to be focused and professional. It's best when we combine the two, but we have to make sure the work is getting done before anything else.”
Can you tell us about your character?
“I play the role of Sapphire Fox, who is now 16 years old. She is mixed-race and adores all things arty. She is fiercely independent and appreciates her own space. She can be moody and sport quite an attitude, but when push comes to shove, she will do anything to help those close to her. She has an affinity with Harry, a young boy at the Dumping Ground, and cares for him as if he were her own brother.”
What is in store for you in the new series?
“In this series, my character moves out of the Dumping Ground and into a new flat, something that she has been dreaming of since she's been in care. However, dramatic turns in events bring her back to reality with a bump...”
How do you get on with Dani Harmer who plays Tracy?
“Dani Harmer and I get on marvelously. She is like a big sister to me and I love her dearly.”
Do you have a fave moment from the new series?
“My favourite moment was when I returned to begin the new series. Seeing everyone again was so wonderful, and I got so many hugs that day I felt quite exhausted!”
What are your favourite CBBC shows – apart from Tracy Beaker of course?
“Sarah Jane Adventures. Hands down.”
