Blue Peter presenter Barney Harwood shows you how to make a light painting by changing the shutter speed on a camera.
What is light painting?
Light painting is a unique way of drawing images using a light source and a camera. You will need a camera with manual shutter settings to be able to create your own light paintings.
The shutter is the click you hear when you take a picture. The longer you leave the shutter open, the more time the light has to make an image on the sensor and then you get something like the photo at the top of this page.
Can I do it at home?
Yes. As well as a camera with adjustable shutter settings, you will also need a tripod and a torch.
Be creative! The torch could be any colour and any size. You will get more effect by using loads of different light sources and it’s a lot more fun.
Tips for technique
It’s all about controlling the camera to do what you want. The more time you have, the better your light painting will look.
Some cameras have the option to set the shutter on a timer, which lets you decide when you want to start and finish taking your picture.
