I’m Harry. My best friend is Jeff the Giraffe. Once, Elektra was really nasty to Jeff and cut his leg off. I felt sick until Sapphire sewed it on again. My best time of day is when Sapphire reads me a bedtime story. There’s giraffe wallpaper in my bedroom. It’s not made of giraffes. It just looks like giraffes. Not the long neck bit of them. Their skin. Mike put it up for me. He said it was to make Jeff feel at home. But if it was like Jeff’s home, then it should be jungle wallpaper. I didn’t tell Mike his mistake, in case it made him sad. I like the giraffe wallpaper, even though Jeff says he’d like a jungle better.
Mike’s nice. So is Tracy. Gina’s nice too, except when she’s shouting. (She doesn’t shout at me, but sometimes she shouts at the others and I don’t like loud noises.) Mike, Tracy and Gina are the only grownups I like. And I never like strangers.
On the Dumping Ground:
I like all the other children at the Dumping Ground. Except Elektra, ‘cos she hurt Jeff. And I didn’t like Johnny that time he threw Jeff down a drain because he wanted me to climb in to it and I wouldn’t, to save Mike’s job. There was a poo in that drain. I saw it. I wasn’t going down that drain, not even for Jeff.
