Charlotte's Web is about a young pig named Wilbur who is the runt of the litter and how his life life is saved by Fern Arable, the daughter of a farmer. Fern takes care of Wilbur during the first few months of his life by feeding him from a bottle and looking after him as if he were a baby.
When Wilbur has gained strength, he is sold to Fern's uncle and lives amongst other animals at his farm, including Charlotte, a spider who he strikes up an unlikely friendship with. Wilbur does not want to meet the usual fate that most farmyard pigs do and his friend Charlotte draws up a plan to save his life - writing messages on her web to convince the humans that he is special and should not be made into bacon.
I first read Charlotte's Web years ago when I was in primary school and it has always been one of my favourite books. I like books that are told through the eyes of animals who deal with the same issues in their daily lives as we humans do. The animals are all great characters and have the same traits as some people you may know. It's hard not to fall in love with cute, innocent Wilbur when reading the book, and not to find yourself gripped by the story, turning pages in the hope that Wilbur survives. Not only does the book contain an important message about life and death, it is also about friendship. Charlotte and Wilbur are unlikely friends and Charlotte expects no fame or praise for her web-spinning or helping Wilbur; she is selfless and helps him simply because they are friends. We could all learn a lot about friendship by reading Charlotte's Web, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't make me shed a little tear at the end!
