In a nutshell...
Zoe is an intelligent, highly talented and ruthlessly ambitious doctor. But she's also a total mess. There's a chaotic and flamboyant energy about her that affects everyone she meets...
Background...
From a mixed-race family, Zoe had something of a hybrid upbringing. Despite having married an Englishwoman, Zoe's father retains a strict disapproval of certain aspects of British life. Over-ambition and promiscuity in women is one of them. As a child, Zoe was the apple of her father's eye (her brother didn't get a look in). She was academically bright, and had that kind of bubbly personality that always hinted at trouble but managed just to avoid it. However, when she hit 16 Zoe began to rebel. After having an affair with one of her father's business colleagues, Zoe refused to apologise and moved out of home. She has barely spoken to her father since. She still sees her mother, but even she is giving up hope that Zoe will calm down, find a good man and give her some grandchildren. Essentially, Zoe's whole life has been a continuation of that early rebellion.

- Saving the life of a shooting victim after her car broke down on a country lane
- Snogging Adam and realising the spark just wasn't there
- Getting promoted to Clinical Lead
- After Maggie was accused of causing the death of a teenager, Zoe was blackmailed by Marilyn into giving false evidence but decided to redeem Maggie in court. In the process she was forced to reveal that she'd been sleeping with Jessica's husband, Sean.
- Finishing her relationship with Sean
- Discovering that she was infertile, getting drunk and ending up in ED after a fall in a pub
- Trying to adopt orphaned Sharice, but finally handing her over to her grandparents.
