In a nutshell...

Ruth is an ambitious go-getting woman. Nothing will stand in the way of her pursuit of perfection except, maybe, herself. Her cry for help was heard when she tried to take her own life, and the team rallied round to help her confidence grow. This doctor's going places and the only way is up for Ruth.

Background...

Ruth was born into a dysfunctional working-class family. Her father was an alcoholic and her mother a weak and lazy woman who was happy to live off the social and spend her days watching TV. Ruth and brother Jonathan were left to their own devices. Jonathan ended up becoming a career criminal by the time he was fourteen. Ruth could have gone the same way, were it not for something that happened on her eighth birthday.

That day she was running from her persecutors and didn't see an approaching car. The ED doctor that dealt with her injuries became her hero and suddenly Ruth's future was mapped out.

Clever, hard-working and focused - she's always been an academic star and never really knew the meaning of failure. For as long as she can remember the two words that have driven her are "success" and "doctor". Achievement over enjoyment at all times - which endears her to her superiors, but not her peers. Ruth's gradually beginning to realise that being a doctor on paper isn't the same as being one in reality...

Character traits...

She always appears confident and capable - but she's cold as ice. She has an encyclopaedic knowledge and often sounds like she's swallowed a medical journal. She never asks for help, as this would be an admission of failure. Friends aren't important to her, but being a great doctor is. Secretly, she wishes she was more of a people person. She's learnt to cover her shyness with a cold confidence. This harsh manner is the way she covers her shyness with people.

Love life...

Love isn't really a word you'd associate with Ruth, but as we've come to discover, she's got hidden depths. She developed a crush on 'Dr Doom', but he was a married man. Although she tried to resist his charms, Ruth has started to fall for the most unlikely of beaus...staff nurse Jay Faldren...How will this relationship work out?

• Her attempted suicide after the pressure of work became too much for her
• Having a one night stand with Nick Jordan.
• Helping Toby confront a mistake and seek help

• Applying for the surgical rotation and being given the opportunity to maybe leave ED forever.
