| Patrick Manning's PNM is facing a challenge from the People's Partnership alliance of the UNC, COP and smaller groups |
An inter-ethnic alliance in Trinidad and Tobago is hoping that it will attract voting across racial lines in next week's general
elections and unseat the governing Peoples National Movement.
Voting in the multi-ethnic nation is historically mainly race-based, split between the afro-dominated PNM and its opponents,
who this time have formed a coalition led by the United National Congress - a party that draws its supports mainly from Trinidadians
of Indian descent.
Their so-called Peoples Partnership is an attempt to break the mould as the National Alliance for Reconstruction of former
prime minister A N R Robinson did in 1986 for one term.
BBC Caribbean's Bertram Niles discussed the race factor with political analyst Professor Selwyn Ryan - and also got the views
of several Trinidadians.
