Triple Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt came to within 0.26 seconds of his personal best of 45.28 seconds established in
2007, at Saturday’s seventh UWI/Gatorade Invitational in Kingston's National Stadium.
The world 100m and 200m record holder looked much improved in his second 400m race of the 2009 season posting 45.54 seconds to win the timed final in cool conditions. Although the race took place more than an hour later than the scheduled 6:50pm start, Bolt still managed to shave 0.81 seconds off his season opening time of 46.35, achieved one week ago at the Camperdown Classic. Running in lane five of heat seven, Bolt exploded from the blocks to take control of the race by 150 metres mark. More relaxed Looking much relaxed than last week, he then sprinted down the home straight with an estimated 3000 spectators cheering him on, to cross the finish line in 45.54 seconds. Bolt’s coach Glen Mills told journalists that he expects the lanky sprinter to improve with every week.
"What you saw is a big difference from last week, but that was expected, each week he will get better and better, until we get right where we want to be," "It is early season and he’s just working on his speed endurance," he said. "Right now we are focusing on getting ready for our first international competition, which is in May, so we still have a lot of work to do to get him back in the shape we want him to be," Mills added. Mills indicated that Bolt’s first real test could be the Jamaica International Invitational, an IAAF Area Permit meet, scheduled for May 2, also inside the National Stadium. "We want to make sure we have some kind of competition," the coach reasoned. Meanwhile, Bolt’s training partner Answert Whyte was second in yesterday’s race with 45.91 secs. |
