It's an important week for Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago as they seek to reach the FIFA world cup finals in 2010.
Jamaica may have won their last two matches but the are in a must-win situation against Canada at home on Wednesday. On the other hand, Trinidad and Tobago now require a draw in their last game with Cuba on Wednesday to hold off Guatemala's challenge. Jamaica have to beat Canada, then hope Honduras loses to Mexico, to advance to the finals of CONCACAF qualifying next year. Even if Honduras draw with Mexico, Jamaica would then need a big win to go through on goal difference. Interim coach Theodore Whitemore has recalled the country's most experienced players for the home match. Europe-based strikers Marlon King and Fabian Taylor, along with midfielder Jason Morrison, were named in the squad. Influential figure Trinidad centre-half Dennis Lawrence believes his side needs to play positively rather than just seeking the point they need to keep in the hunt to qualify for the second successive finals. "It would be great to get there again," Lawrence said. It is a view shared by the most influential figure in local football, FIFA vice president and Concacaf head Jack Warner. "We made history in 2005, but for me what is more important is for us to show that it was not a one off wonder," he said. Costa Rica, El Salvador and the US have already advanced and will join the other three nations emerging from Wednesday's play for the Concacaf final round. |
