BBC Caribbean News In Brief

Tsunami Warning System

Barbados is one of the countries working with the US Geological Survey and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on the development of a Caribbean-wide tsunami warning system.

Judy Thomas, the Director of Emergency Services at Barbados' Central Emergency Relief Organisation, told BBC Caribbean Report that the system would be key in helping the region stave off a disaster like the one which devastated South East Asia in December 2004.

Trinidad & Tobago

Trinidad and Tobago's Soca Warriors have a new coach.

He's Dutchman Wim Rijsbergen, who had been the Soca Warrior's assistant coach.

He takes over as Leo Beenhakker moves to his new job coaching the Polish national side.

Beenhakker, however, will retain a two-year advisory contract with the Warriors.

HIV & Aids

A new 3-in-one drug could help the Caribbean in treating HIV/Aids.

The anti retro-viral pill combines three existing pills, which are currently being used to treat the illness around the world.

It was recently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration for distribution in America, and will be available through the US-sponsored global campaign against HIV/Aids in the Caribbean, Africa and Asia.

Dr Wayne Greaves, the Senior Director of the HIV Section of an American based pharmaceutical company says the drug will be used primarily in developing countries.
