Cambridgeshire
saw a month's worth of rainfall in just one night on Sunday 21st
October 2001. Cambridge had its wettest day for over 100 years.
It caused widespread flooding with a number of people having to
be evacuated from their houses.

Firemen
survey the damage

Down
at the Riverside area in Cambridge the Fire and Rescue service had
been working since very early in the morning to pump out the basements
of the 10 to 12 houses that had been affected.
The water levels had been going down all morning but it was difficult
to know exactly when it would drain away, especially as more rain
was forecast.

Riverside
flooding

The
Cambridgeshire police were urging people to be cautious when walking
through flooded areas. They said it was possible that manhole covers
had been lifted by the floods, posing a danger to people who accidentally
walk over them. They were taping off areas as best they could but
at the Riverside, people were still trying to cut through from Midsummer
Common.

Fen and Sheep's Green

Commuters
and homeowners weren't the only casualties. A herd of cows had to
be rescued after becoming stranded on Coe Fen in Cambridge. Cyril
Mansfield from the City Council says they had to act quickly to
rescue the cattle.
The
Oakington Reception Centre for asylum seekers had been taking in
flood victims. Ten elderly people from the villages of Oakington
and Hilton whose bungalows and flats were flooded have been staying
in a spare accomodation block.
