Latest news from the Cambridge Safety Camera Partnership (June 2003)
You may have noticed a few new safety cameras popping up around the county this spring. Cambridgeshire Safety Camera Partnership has installed four new cameras on the sites which, in total, have seen 19 people killed or seriously injured in the last three years, due to excess speed.

The new cameras, which will be commissioned in July 2003, can be found in the following locations:

Camera site Speed limit Fatals Serious
Ditton Lane, Cambridge 30 0 6
Milton Road, Cambridge 30 0 5
A1123 Bluntisham 60 2 2
A10 Brandon Creek 60 1 3

The figures above cover the period 1st January 1999 to 31st December 2001.

Fixed sites conform to the guidelines for safety camera partnerships announced by government in December 2001, ensuring the cameras are yellow, clearly visible and signed in advance.

Mobile speed units
From the 10th July, 2003, the 3.3 miles of the A1073 from the A47 to the county border should become a safer route as it is being patrolled by the mobile safety camera vans. In the last three years, the road has seen four deaths, 25 serious and 64 slight injuries.

The route has been subjected to speed surveys and crash data analysis to ensure it meets government guidelines. Signage has also been introduced to ensure all road users are aware that the road will be covered by mobile vans.

Cambridgeshire police have also been trialling mobile speed units around the county in a further attempt to cut the number of speed-related accidents. The vans will be clearly visible and not hidden behind any obstacles. The vehicles are bright yellow and blue, displaying the logo of the Safety Camera Partnership. The routes will cover stretches of road where people have been killed or seriously injured in the last three years and there is a history of excess speed.

Static cameras
Between April and August 2002, the county's static cameras were installed at sites which have had four or more fatal/serious injury collisions in the last three years and have a history of excessive speed.

Bourges Boulevard in Peterborough, for example had five serious accidents in the last three years, one of which was a fatality.

Where are the county's cameras?

quote We want drivers to realise the cameras are there to protect them, their passengers, their family and friends from suffering the trauma of a road crash quote
Sergeant Andy Chatfield, Project Manager

Sergeant Andy Chatfield, Project Manager, said: "These new cameras will undoubtedly save lives as they are located where there is a history of speed related collisions.

"The partnership is determined to ensure people are aware that cameras are located where there is a heightened danger in driving over the speed limit. We want drivers to realise the cameras are there to protect them, their passengers, their family and friends from suffering the trauma of a road crash."
