Working with the year seven students was the actress and the star of the New Zealand film Whale Rider.

The students were taught a haka powhiri (or greeting) which is a traditional Maori perfomance by six of the members of Te Ropu Maori.

The multi-award winning Whale Rider is based on the book by New Zealand writer Witi Ihimaera. The movie is a magical and deeply moving story of a young girl's struggle to fulfil her destiny.
