Although Justin and Henry are both experienced endurance athletes, neither has ever rowed before. They will complete seven months of intensive training before their maiden voyage and are currently being coached by The King’s School, Ely.

A raft of fundraising events are planned over the coming months including a rowathon in the Grafton Centre from 22-24 October, a musical evening event at Cambridge United and a charity dinner in November.

"My reasons for this trip are twofold - to raise money for the Cancer Research Unit at Addenbrooke’s while undertaking an adventure I’ve always dreamed of."
Justin Coleman

First time rowers Henry Dale and Justin Coleman have set themselves the mammoth task of crossing the Atlantic in just under seven weeks to raise vital funds for Addenbrooke’s Oncology Department.

From stand-up to rower, Justin just can't stop!
Justin Coleman, ready for anything...
Setting sail from La Gomera in the Canary Islands the pair will embark on their voyage of a lifetime on 20 January 2004 as part of the Ocean Rowing Society’s annual Atlantic Race.

Rowing in a boat just 24 foot long and five feet wide, and armed with only 90 days supply of food and basic navigation equipment, they aim to raise £100,000 for Cancer Research Nurses at Addenbrookes.

Their high seas adventure has the full backing of the Fund for Addenbrooke's and the hospital’s Oncology Department, which will use the funds raised to expand its team of cancer research nurses.

"Cancer is the major cause of death in the UK. In our lifetime, one in four of us will get cancer and one in three people will die from it..."
Dr Pippa Corrie, Oncology Consultant at Addenbrookes

Commenting on the mission, Dr Pippa Corrie, Oncology Consultant at Addenbrookes said, "Cancer is the major cause of death in the UK. In our lifetime, one in four of us will get cancer and one in three people will die from it. Justin and Henry are an inspiration. The £100,000 they are aiming to raise for the department by rowing to The West Indies will secure continued funding for our current team and will enable us to increase our number of nurses in order to support research into rarer cancers."

Henry Dale is a successful finance system consultant who's not afraid to get his feet wet!
Henry Dale loves the challenge...
Henry and Justin are a quarter of the way towards their target, having secured sponsorship and charitable donations of £25,000. They are now looking for additional sponsorship from the wider Cambridgeshire community and are inviting bids from a major sponsor to get on board and provide a name for their boat, which will be making its third Atlantic crossing.

"Addenbrookes is a world-class hospital and we are proud to be undertaking a global-scale challenge for such a worthwhile cause" said Henry Dale, a finance system consultant born and raised in Cambridge.

"My reasons for this trip are twofold - to raise money for the Cancer Research Unit at Addenbrooke’s while undertaking an adventure I’ve always dreamed of." Justin added, "The physical and mental aspects of a challenge of this nature fascinate me. Until we get out there we can’t imagine how we will feel but are certain that it will change us forever," said Justin. "It’s an immense challenge for us but nothing compared to the challenges that cancer patients face up on a daily basis and we wanted to make a contribution to their cause."

To keep up to date with Henry and Justin’s progress before and during their trip visit Two Men in a Boat.

Get ready for some serious power rowin'! Let's just hope they don't fall out! Water, water, everywhere...
