Woodwork
Diary:
Making a coffee table - Week 5
Last
week I finished cutting the table top blocks so that they'll fit
together like a picture frame, now I had to cut grooves into them
to hold the glass and the plywood bottom.
Once
again we decided to use a spare block to test the plane and so that
I could practice using it.
You
can use different sized blades in the plane and you can adjust how
deep the blade will go and how far across.

As
you run the plane along your piece of wood there are two shoulders
on the plane so that you can't possibly go any deeper or wider than
you've measured. Sounds
simple - but I thought I'd practice first!
Paul
suggested that I cut a groove about 10mm wide and about 6mm deep
for the glass to sit on. For the bottom piece of plywood it would
need to be about 10mm wide, but only 3mm deep as I will only be
using a 3mm thick piece of ply.

After
starting cautiously, I soon got the hang of it. It can be quite
tough if you are planing against the grain of the wood, but soon
I had finished all four blocks of wood on both sides. You can begin
to see how the top frame will fit together in the picture.
Next
week I guess I'll be gluing the blocks together and fixing the plywood
base to the frame! Find out how I do that in Week 6!
