Woodwork
Diary:
Making a coffee table - Week 3
After
collecting my wood last week and sawing it up into bits, this week
I started the tricky task of cutting my blocks to
45°
at the ends - the technical term is to 'mitre' them - so
they'll fit together like a picture frame.

Using
a mitre saw
|
To
cut the wood to exactly 45° I used a special mitre saw. A mitre
saw allows you to select an angle, lock the saw in place and theoretically
you get a perfect angle.
Paul
suggested using a spare block of wood to test that the saw was ok,
it looked like it hadn't been used much recently!
Even
though it was a spare piece of wood, I was still a little nervous
about using the mitre saw. I didn't want to bodge it up!

Test
blocks fitting together
|
My
two test pieces looked good though and fitted together perfectly,
so now onto the real thing - ahhhhhhh!
Trying
to keep the saw in the right position I cautiously started sawing
my first block. Maybe because I was being so careful, it took ages
to saw through the whole piece. I had to take a break half way through,
I was definitely building up some muscles here!
I managed
to get one more block done and then it was time to go home!
Find
out if I manage to get all four blocks done next week in diary instalment
