Woodwork Diary:
Making a coffee table - Week 1

Without actually having any wood on my first lesson, I wasn't able to start sawing or sanding, but I was able to talk to Paul about my ideas and I drew a sketch of what I'd like to make. I'd originally wanted to make a big cabinet to go in my hallway, but there's not really any storage at the college, so you have to be able to bring in your work every week.

I thought a coffee table would just about fit in my car, so I drew out a simple sketch. As you can see, I was going to create some type of checker-board top, possibly even make it a chess table - but then I had a brain wave (well I thought it was!) - why not give it a glass top with a section below to display things in?

Cutting list
My cutting list

Paul and I discussed the best way to make the table, what type of wood I should use and then he left me to draw up a cutting list.

The cutting list is useful when you speak to the people who supply your wood. It tells them exactly what measurements you need and how much wood you require in total. It's normally written out in how many pieces you need - at length, width and thickness. For example, you may need two pieces of wood, 40cm long, 5cm wide and 3cm thick.
You would write this - 2 @ 40 x 5 x 3.

I figured out what measurements I'd like and made up my list. I wanted the table to be in a light wood and Paul suggested ash, cherry or maple. He told me to try ringing his friend Nick Garner who might have some spare wood that would be suitable for my project.

So next week, providing I've found some wood, I'll be learning some new skills and sawing the various pieces of wood to size!
