It seems the good old days were anything but, if you were criminally inclined.

Admittedly, there were some very grim acts committed in the 1700s and 1800s, from pre-meditated poisoning to wily witchcraft.

Handing out punishment
"Hang by the neck til ye be dead!"

But equally grim in most cases was the chosen punishment, such as being burnt at the stake for murdering a spouse, execution for causing a riot and an 18-month gaol sentence for stealing a fork and spoon!
