A tranquil environment to get together and watch the birds, butterflies and bees. Bridget on the garden...We are the Mansfield Almshouses inmates and have a communal courtyard garden which is a very special place. ![]() Mansfield Almshouses The courtyard is surrounded by high brick walls and the six cottages back onto it. Clematis and climbing roses scale the walls. Baskets, flower pouches, planters are all full of trailing and bedding plants. There is also a water feature on one wall. Birds, butterflies and bees are ever present. Squirrels dig up our spring bulb and entertain us with astounding acrobatics to access the bird feeders. The key feature of the garden is a hexagonal table in the centre of the garden. It is here, surrounded by flowers, that we have spent many, many enjoyable hours, listening to the birds, sharing barbeques, meals, 'tales of woe' and jokes. It's the 'hub' of the garden. In of the central beds is a rowan tree, magnolia soulangea and a little 3 year old maple which has thrived and has the most glorious reddish hues. ![]() The Almshouses garden As well as flowers we have strawberry planters, runner beans, tomatoes and potatoes. For a smallish courtyard this mix does sound cluttered, but, strangely enough, it's quite delightful. It is a lovely tranquil environment. Bridget on her love of gardening...Gardening is a passion for me. I love playing in the dirt and then sitting back and admiring it all. For me, it is a creative process of nurturing life and creating beauty, getting close to nature and enjoying the wildlife. ![]() Mansfield Almshouses My favourite time of year is spring, when the gloomy nights and cold weather give way to the spring bulbs. The perennials poke their heads out of the ground with the promise of sunny days to come. I have many favourite plants, most of all tall cottage garden plants. At the moment sweet pees are my favourites. We all have vases of their sweet fragrance in our cottages. If a plant looks good and is also fragrant it's a favourite. There is sense of adventure when trying new seeds and plants even though you might have to wait a full year. I love the excitement of seeing seeds grow, flourish and bloom, the ability to 'right most 'wrongs'. last updated: 17/09/07 You are in: Cambridgeshire > Features > People Like You > Mansfield Almshouses, Chesterton - Bridget Burrow and friends |
