At the end of last year, BBC Radio Cambridgeshire in partnership with CSV Media and BBC RaW organised some story writing workshops across Cambridgeshire. The idea was to inspire people who had never thought they would do anything like this and encourage them to come up with a short story about Christmas. The results were broadcast on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire on each of the Twelve Days of Christmas. Sarah Perks from Wisbech was one of those who took part. She tells us about her experiences of helping her daughter to read, and about learning to write stories at the workshop. She says that having her story chosen for the Twelve Days of Christmas feature was very exciting... Sarah had never tried creative writing before and explains that it was harder than she thought it was going to be. She even suffered from writers' block and says that most of her ideas came to her at 1am or 2am! Even though the project is over now, Sarah says she thinks story writing is something she will continue to do - the benefits far outweighed the hours of poring over the PC! Listen to Sarah's story Sarah's story is called Finding Jesus. It's based on a school Nativity play and involves her two daughters, Georgina and Isabella. She decided to set the story at Georgina's school and thought that a Nativity play at Christmas time would be an ideal subject. She wanted to write a story that would involve them both, but had to consider the age gap and how best she could include her two daughters. She says that learning to write the story was "like a rollercoaster! Mostly all highs, lots of fun and it has encouraged me to keep on writing". The story is read by Jane Smith. |
