Swing is an old dance craze making a new return to Cambridge. The couple behind it met through their love of swing. Matt was Lotte's tutor in Melbourne, threw her over his shoulder a few times and with a skip and a hop they'd joined forces and are now on a mission to bring swing to the City of Cambridge. The style of dance is a bit of a mixed bag of tricks with moves grabbed from tap and the Charleston originating in the 1920's and 30's from the streets of Harlem, New York. Fondly known as The Lindy or Lindy Hop, it's a wild and vibrant style that demands kicks, twists and high flown flicks into the air that's electrically charged by the union of a couple. And this couple, armed with a group of like-minded swingmeisters, are hoping that others will join in the fun. They stress that it's for anyone of any age and you don't have to bring a partner. Turn up. Wear loose clothing (go all out on the retro gear if you'd like) and be prepared for lots of fun. They're bringing The Lindy to St Paul's Church in Hill's Road in October on Wednesday evenings. So, if you're a swinger, get swinging!
Watch Matt, Lotte and friends in action doing The Lindy in Cambridge at the Mill Pond with Shim Sham Song in the background, written by Bill Elliott and performed by the JW Swing Orchestra with John Wanner, leader of the Orchestra.
